The training has begun…
So in addition to getting ClarkeDesign ramped up and in full speed, I have committed (actually me typing this here right now is the most significant committment) to doing my first triathlon! It will be a beginner tri (a sprint) in October at Mission Bay. I think the distances are 500meter swim, 15k bike, 5k run. Crazy eh? My friend Paul Frederikson mentioned this to me about 5 years ago, but I havn’t taken the bait. Not until recently when Phil, who has done two Half Ironmans, got in my ear to do it as well. So since I enjoyed biking on my trip so much, I was suddenly more open to the idea. 2 out of 3 parts of the Tri, I think I can handle…just gotta figure out how to pull off the swim part!
Well, yesterday morning, my fan club (lovely wife), accompanied me to La Jolla Cove where I met up with Christian, friend who is crazy swimmer guy (swam from Catalina Island to LA!!!!!!!). He talked me into meeting him at La Jolla Cove to do a swim out to the first buoy out there and see how it went. Well, despite being nervous (dark scary fish, open ocean, and the whle drowning thing), and 1/4 mile each way, I managed to do it! At 7 in the morning on a weekend no less! Thanks to Christian, his wife Joyce, and all his swim buddies out there encouraging me that is. I swam a quarter mile out to the buoy, and then back to the cove. Was easier than I thought (aka didn’t drown or vomit) but I sure was tired all day (and today)!
So, now that I have confirmed the swimming can be at least done, its time to do this thing! I plan to ramp up some training and welcome anyone to join on any of the parts that would like to. My buddy Celso is not about to let me hold over his head that I have done a tri and not him, so he might end up doing it with Phil, Alison and myself too!
Here’s to breaking a sweat, meeting some cool folks, and checking off another goal in life off the list! October here I come!

Right on brudda! Not sure my old bones could handle even training for one of those, but it is inspiring watching you do it!
